After the Bloom
Yo! This will be my first Godot Wild Jam entry and the first game on this account!
So let's float through what happened during this wild jam.
Getting an Idea
To start I had to get an idea for the theme of Ascension. I was pretty lost but I looked up cute characters on sketchfab to see if there was anything I could get inspired by; and I found a cute little critter! Who unfortunately didn't make the jam cut but was originally the whole idea of the jam.
Originally you'd have an island surrounded by water that you'd rotate as these little critters spawned in and roamed around. You'd have to rotate them away from incoming enemies; like a bullet-hell but peaceful looking.
However once I got an island in the engine with some water; I had bigger ideas inspired by Wind Waker which I've been recently playing alongside Disgaea 6. (A tactics game was almost the jam game but I started with 3 days left and a full-time day job so I didn't)
We all Float Here
now that I had the idea I just needed to make the game! So after a while of getting a camera rig setup and running; and after painfully messing with how to move the island....I had a floating island! It was pretty cool, wasn't super fun yet but at the time there was no enemies, nothing to collect; nothing but a day and night cycle and a floating island.
So then I tossed in an acid rain cloud that could spawn! I modeled a sea arch that could spawn and it'll sink once you pass through it granting you inhabitants (currently only plants). Then I added in music sheets that when collected would grant you faster blooming aka faster creation of inhabitants.
This kind of tied the game into music and sound so I added some to the game and added a music note particle effect to available collectables. I want to tie it in further down the road.
"Eh I Don't want to"
Eventually I had a more or less complete game and I was happy. I still wanted to add a scoring system, a main menu of sorts; and some menus for general ease of play and progression. But due to a ton of personal events in life I decided to get rest or play some games instead. I had already done a ton in just a single 24 hour period.
Eventually I came back before my day job cutting it close to write this up and add a few final touches to the game; but this has been a pretty fun time!
Blooming
Down the road I'd like to give updates to this game, probably nothing serious for quite a while if ever; but I see a very artistic and intricate vision in this project I'd like to explore.
For now .
